            Most people on Mafia are Sunni Muslims, but there is also a minority of Christians. The 2002 population census shows that Mafia has about 40,000.

            Mafia is a large island lying off the southern coast of Tanzania. Mafia Island is the site of Tanzania’s first Marine Park. Mafia is currently considered to be one of the poorest areas of Tanzania. Its inhabitants are largely dependent upon agriculture and fishing.

            Although Mafia is famous for its mats, the women receive relatively little money for them.

            Kilindoni is its main town. Mafia Island’s airport is situated in Kilindoni. In this town, there is a small hospital too.
