Rasputin

                            TEXT

Rasputin, Grigory Yefimovich (1872-1916), Russian mystic and court figure, whose pervasive influence over the imperial family helped to destroy its reputation in prerevolutionary Russia. He was born in Pokrovskoye, Siberia. Rasputin was uneducated and lived as a peasant until about 1901, when he left his family to become a wandering holy man. He soon acquired a wide reputation for both his faith healing and his debauched behavior. In 1905, during a visit to Saint Petersburg, then the site of the national capital, Rasputin was presented at court and made a deep impression on Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna. Because he was able to relieve the suffering of her hemophiliac son and heir to the Russian throne, Alexis Nikolayevich, Rasputin became the most influential person in the czarina's entourage. After 1911 many high government offices were filled by his appointees, most  of whom were incompetent. After the start of World War I in 1914, when Emperor Nicholas II went to the front to take command of the army, Rasputin became the decisive influence in the government, advising Alexandra on the conduct of internal affairs. His famous orgies scandalized the people of Russia., and rumors circulated that he was conspiring with Germany. Called the Mad monk, he became an object of hatred, and on December 29, 1916, a group of aristocrats assassinated him during a midnight tea party. Rasputin's influence over the royal family was partly responsible for the rising tide of discontent that led to the 1917 revolution and the downfall of the monarchy.

Louise Joy Brown (born 25 July 1978, in Oldham, Greater Manchester, UK) is the first person to be conceived by in vitro fertilization, or IVF.
Birth
Louise Brown was born to Lesley and John Brown, who had been trying to conceive for nine years, but without success because of blocked fallopian tubes. On 10 November 1977, Lesley Brown underwent a procedure, later to become known as IVF, developed by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. Edwards was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Medicine for this work.
Brown was born 25 July 1978 at 11:47 p.m. at Oldham General Hospital, Oldham, via planned Caesarean section delivered by registrar John Webster. She weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces (2.608 kg) at birth.
Although the media referred to her as a "test tube baby", her conception actually took place in a petri dish.
Her younger sister, Natalie Brown, was also conceived through IVF four years later, and became the world's fortieth IVF baby, and the first one to give birth herself—naturally—in 1999.

Ethical and religious issues

Although the Browns knew the procedure was experimental, the doctors did not tell them that no case had yet resulted in a baby. This has raised questions of informed consent.
Shortly before the death of Pope Paul VI, when asked for his reaction to Brown's birth, the patriarch of Venice, Albino Cardinal Luciani (later Pope John Paul I), expressed concerns about the possibility that artificial insemination could lead to women being used as "baby factories", but also refused to condemn the parents of the child (cf moral theology of John Paul I).
Later life
Brown married nightclub doorman Wesley Mullinder in 2004, with Dr. Edwards attending their wedding. Their son Cameron, conceived naturally, was born on 20 December 2006. Nowadays Louise Brown is a postal worker.
